All about Sweden Uppsala - Stockholm 5/5 [] Uppsala cathedral> Upplands museum > Uppsala castle

It was summer travel for avoiding hot, going to Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark in 2013. But it was updated in 2020. Opening time depends on season, so you have to check opening time on the homepage  before visiting. And they closes Christmas, New year day, Epiphany and so on.

I was thinking about where to go in the suburbs using my rail pass. The city I chose is Uppsala. Although it is not a famous tourist destination, it is the fourth largest city after Stockholm, Goteburg (Yetheborg), and Malmo, and I decided to visit here because it is close to it.

There is also Uppsala University, the oldest university and prestigious university in Scandinavia. One of the most famous people from here is Carl von Linne, the father of biological taxonomy and he also invented the popular temperature of Celsius temperature digree.

Get on the black train to Uppsala. I had a fresh feeling that the train color was black but the inside was that of a familiar. It was a second-class seat but it was not crowded. So clean and quiet, it was good to board. The train from Stockholm to Uppsala runs twice an hour and takes about 40 minutes. The train is convenient and fast because it takes about an hour by bus.

It's a tourist map in Uppsala. There is Upsala Station on the right and many tourist attractions not far away so I walked without using transportation. You can see Uppsala Castle, Cathedral, Art Museum, University, Botanic Garden.

When I came out from train station and moved toward the Fyrisån River, there was a sign, so I could easily move to the destination where I wanted. If you're staying in Uppsala, please consider purchasing an Uppsala card. It is sold by Storatorget and has a daily ticket of 125 SEK. As of 2013, it is a city card that offers free access to tourist attractions and public transportation.

@Domkyrkan; Uppsala cathedral

Opne_ 8:00~18:00

Uppsala Cathedral is not the first cathedral built in Uppsala. The first cathedral is called Gamla Uppsala Church, which began to be built around 1270. French architector Étienne de Bonneuil was in charge of building the cathedral and built the chapel part in the east, the altar, the main gates in the south and north. In 1331, he once again asked King Magnus Ericsson Upflanders for a building fund and the cathedral was completed "with the grace of God in a short period of time." It shows that the king's pleading and traces of the wall consisted of the cathedral and chapel at the end of the altar.

However, in the late 1300s, the original plan was completed by bringing a new stone (inside the church) from the West. Nicholas, an architect from Basteras, was one of the people in charge of the long part of the cathedral, which is simpler in design than the eastern part of the cathedral.

The completion of the cathedral was not until 1435 due to problems such as lack of funds, severe cold, and pest outbreaks. It took about 160 years to complete. The cathedral was built of bricks made nearby, but the pillars in the front are limestone from Goteborg. No one knows what the cathedral looked like at the time of its completion because there is no design left. Perhaps each chapel had the Holy Cross, Maria, and more than one altar.

The new stone, the western part of the church with benches, was built in the late 1300s and early 1400s and the towers were built decades after completion.
The image viewed from the tower is a cross-shaped cathedral consisting of a passage and a transcept (the left and right wings of the cross church). Most churches have entrances to the west and choirs on high altars to the east. It is said that the south gate was used until the west main gate was completed in the 1430s.

Some archbishops built a cathedral school in the late 1200s, not just focusing on the cathedral, or Archbishop Jacob Wolfson established the University of Uppsala in 1477. In 1523-1560, during Gustav Vasa's reign, Roman Catholic Church left the Swedish church and in 1593, it became Lutheran Church at the Uppsala Conference.

As mentioned before, the reason why we don't know what the Uppsala Cathedral's appearance is because of the fire. The most damaging fire among several fires was the fire in 1702 and the restoration was not completed until the mid-1700s. It is characterized by changing trend as Roman Catholicism left. The wall was replaced with ordinary glass instead of stained glass, and the height of the newly built tower was lowered.

Gustav Vasa and queen are also buried here but there are also aristocrats and famous botanist Ulof Ludbeck, Linne, Archbishop, Nobel Peace Prize winners Nathan Söderblom, Emanuel Swedenborg.

In the late 1800s, architects tried to restore the cathedral to its original appearance. In 1885-1893 architect Helgo Zettervall restored the cathedral in Gothic style, building current murals, window glass, and pointed spire. Now, it has become the largest and highest cathedral among Nordic cathedrals to the height of the spire.

Remodeling continued from 1971 to 1976, walls and windows became clean. Modern wall  of the five chapels have been changed to strengthen the role of canopy as a place of worship.
Uppsala Cathedral had a place to worship every day as a solemn service and church gathering after Middle Ages. Swedish bishops and priests were ordained and Swedish kings and queens even held a coronation here until 1719.

In 2010, the replacement of new sprinkler systems, electricity, water, and heating pipes was converted to strengthen the protection and in 2012, the light and sound equipment were improved, window preservation began. Pay attention to the 18th-century Baroque pulpit, wood candle, wooden sculpture table, clock tower and stained glass, pipe organ! The costumes include Queen Margaret's golden dress, the only  clothing preserved since the Middle Ages, Sten sture's clothing, which is the only men's clothing preserved since the Renaissance.

About 100,000 people attend worship and concerts at the cathedral every year. 300,000 tourist visit the Uppsala Cathedral to have a moment of silence.

You can enter the guide tour. It was built by King Gustav Vasa and there was also a ceremony for the accession of Eric XIV in 1561, a member of the Sture family and a ceremony for Queen Christina's delegation ceremony in 1654. Eric XIV's crown during the accession ceremony was created in 1561 and was later worn at the accession ceremony of kings, which is said to be the oldest existing crown. It is currently on display at the Royal Museum.

It's city view from Uppsala castle.

There is a Linne museum over the garden.

I searched who Eric XIV was, he must have treated the nobility harshly to strengthen the royal authority as the son of Gustav Vasa. Eventually, he was deposed by his younger brothers and died of stomach ulcers while in prison. But there were rumors that his younger brother killed Eric 14 with addiction in his soup. In modern times, as a result of component analysis, arsenic was really found. Eric XIV constantly courted Elizabeth I of England, but he was rejected, he also courted another woman and eventually refused.
So he eventually married a commoner. Elizabeth I is the Queen of England who has been single all her life and said, "I married to the state." Maybe there were the reason that she didn't want to marry. Admiral Seymou was previously executed for proposing marriage Queen Elizabeth without government permission. Also Queen was schocked that her father killed her stepmother and biological mother.

Surprisingly, it's hard to get detailed information about visiting Upsala Castle. It was written in the guidebook that the inside of the building was only possible through a guide tour (12:45, 14:45) but I think I just watched it by myself. There was a work of art inside, so it felt like a gallery.

Gamla uppsala, There is a tomb site in the 6th century about 15 minutes away from the center.
It took less than two hours back and forth from Stockholm to Uppsala, but I don't think it's a good place to take time to come for tourist who has limited time. If I plan to travel to Sweden again, I'd like to have more time in Stockholm with relax.

I feel about Stockholm, there are warm and chilly. People look like chic but they greet me when I enter the store and I have no bad experience in Stockholm as racism.

When I came back to the city by train, it was suddenly raining. It looked like a shower, so I stopped quickly under the store's ploof. It didn't catch my feet for long like the last in Finland. And I stopped by the market and bought beer and a sandwich wrapped up at a kebab restaurant near my hotel and beer. I spent last time with them there. Pripps bla, a beer on the left and Spendrubs on the right are Swedish beers.
